Theodore Komnenos Doukas

Theodore Komnenos Doukas
Ruler of the Despotate of Epiros (q.v.) from ca. 1215-1230. He was emperor at Thessalonike (qq.v.) from 1224-1230, and he posed the chief threat to the Latin Empire (q.v.) until 1230. He captured Peter of Courtenay in 1217 and occupied Thessalonike in 1224, where he was crowned emperor. After his conquest of Adrianople (q.v.) in 1225, he was poised for an attempt on Latin-occupied Constantinople (q.v.) when he was defeated and captured at the battle of Klokotnitsa (q.v.) in 1230. His younger brother Manuel Angelos (both were members of the Angelos family) escaped capture and gained control of Thessalonike from 1230-ca. 1237, by which time Bulgar Tsar John Asen II (qq.v.) released Theodore. In 1252 John III Vatatzes (q.v.) imprisoned him in Nicaea (q.v.), where he died soon afterward.
